One of my earliest memories of the term "lost in translation" is from 1972 when President Richard Nixon embarked on his historic visit to China. I recall news coverage and the fear pundits expressed of our President's best intended comments being "lost in translation." In other words, the Chinese language didn't have exact or even comparable words or symbols to express some very important forms of English communication. I see the same phenomenon repeated every four years in the American political environment.
