TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Practical Tips for Teen Drivers
A teen’s first priority while driving should be to pay attention to the highway. Some helpful tips for keeping their eyes on the road include:

  1. Give enough distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to allow you a view of all your surroundings. A driver should be able to see the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you.
  2. Identify “stale” green lights — a light the driver did not see turn green — and prepare to stop if it turns red before you reach it.
  3. Be observant and expect other drivers to do unpredictable things while driving around you, such as speeding and changing lanes.
  4. Use your signals, lights and horn to communicate with other drivers on the road.
  5. Establish cushion space by delaying your start from an intersection by three seconds after the vehicle in front of you has moved.
  6. Check your mirrors every five to eight seconds because hazards that can cause an accident aren’t always in front of you.

Learning the risks and consequences of driving, plus hands-on experience behind the wheel, is essential to improve driving among teens. Drivers’ education, graduated licensing systems and teen-driving programs provide youth important information and the opportunity to practice safe driving.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Buying a Diamond Engagement Ring: What You Need to Know

When deciding to get engaged, you’ll surely have a lot running through your mind, but putting yourself into debt by buying an overpriced engagement ring shouldn’t be one of them. Some people still go by the old “two month’s salary” standard, but that surely isn’t necessary.

How much should I spend?
Decide on your budget before heading out to the jewelry store, where you put yourself under the pressure of sales people and special offers. Remember that you aren’t out to impress the jeweler (who you’ve never even met before) or anyone else with the price of your engagement ring. Stay within your parameters and you’ll keep yourself out of debt.

Should we buy the ring together?
Relationship statistics show that more than half of men surprise their loved one with a diamond engagement ring during their proposal. This means that the majority of men get no input if size, cut, and cost are important to her. By bringing her along to the check out rings, you can get a better picture of the finances behind the ring and you’ll know that she will get the engagement ring she truly wants.

How much do diamond engagement rings cost?
There are two major factors which contribute to the cost of a diamond: a ratings system called the “Four Cs” and whether or not the diamond is ASG/GIA certified. The Four Cs refers to the diamond’s color, cut, clarity, and carat size. As a general rule, as a diamond increases in size and clarity, and decreases in color, the price of the diamond rises. Diamonds that are ASG/GIA certified are also more expensive.

Big-box competitors buy in huge volume, take a loss on selected items for a period of time, and in the process, drive small competitors out of business. Sounds brutal, but the word for it is “capitalism.” Companies don’t survive unless they adapt to what consumers want. However, times are changing! Consumers have decided they want it all: low prices, quality products and excellent customer service — and why not? Click HERE to read more from Dale about the comeback of great customer service!

Trust Dale Tip of the Day: *2011 SUMMER SAFETY TIPS – SUN AND WATER SAFETY

Keep your family safe this summer by following these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

FUN IN THE SUN

Babies under 6 months:

  • The two main recommendations from the AAP to prevent sunburn are to avoid sun exposure, and to dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However, when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of sunscreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas, such as the infant’s face and the back of the hands. If an infant gets sunburn, apply cold compresses to the affected area.

For All Other Children:

  • The first, and best, line of defense against harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is covering up. Wear a hat with a three-inch brim or a bill facing forward, sunglasses (look for sunglasses that provide 97% -100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays), and cotton clothing with a tight weave.
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours – between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • On both sunny and cloudy days use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Be sure to apply enough sunscreen – about one ounce per sitting for a young adult.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
  • Use extra caution near water and sand (and even snow!) as they reflect UV rays and may result in sunburn more quickly.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Auto Theft Prevention Tips

Taking precautionary measures can minimize your chances of becoming the victim of auto theft. In the United States a vehicle is stolen an average of every 21 minutes. Not only does auto theft costs the victim time and money, but also it cost society, because it drives insurance premiums up and many times stolen vehicles are used to commit other crimes.

Car thefts seem to occur with greater frequency where large groups of cars are parked for extended periods of time in places such as shopping centers, colleges, sporting events, movie complexes, and large apartment complexes, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Car thefts can occur anytime — at random on different days of the week and times of the day, depending on the locations.

Below are some tips you can use to avoid being the victim of a car thief:

  1. Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home;
  2. Always park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas, when possible;
  3. Investigate the purchase of a vehicle theft tracking/security system, especially if you own one of the frequently stolen model vehicles;
  4. If you must leave your key with a valet, attendant, or mechanic leave only the ignition key. Make sure you are dealing with a reputable firm.
  5. In high theft areas the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) should be etched on windows, doors, fenders and trunk lid. This makes it difficult for a thief to market your stolen car parts.
  6. Copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a card and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report; and,
  7. Many vehicles today come with some type of security system from the factory. Normally there are upgraded systems available if you ask. The best choices are systems that shut off the fuel supply so that a car can’t be started or driven.
  8. If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: * Ways to Prepare For Retirement

Financial security in retirement doesn’t just happen. It takes planning and commitment and, yes, money.

Facts

  • Fewer than half of Americans have calculated how much they need to save for retirement.
  • In 2009, 13 percent of private industry workers with access to a defined contribution plan (such as a 401(k) plan) did not participate.
  • The average American spends 20 years in retirement.

Putting money away for retirement is a habit we can all live with. Remember… Saving Matters!

  1. Start saving, keep saving, and stick to your goals
If you are already saving, whether for retirement or another goal, keep going! You know that saving is a rewarding habit. If you’re not saving, it’s time to get started. Start small if you have to and try to increase the amount you save each month. The sooner you start saving, the more time your money has to grow (see the chart below). Make saving for retirement a priority. Devise a plan, stick to it, and set goals. Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start saving.

  2. Know your retirement needs
Retirement is expensive. Experts estimate that you will need about 70 percent of your preretirement income – lower earners, 90 percent or more – to maintain your standard of living when you stop working. Take charge of your financial future. The key to a secure retirement is to plan ahead.

  3. Contribute to your employer’s retirement savings plan
If your employer offers a retirement savings plan, such as a 401(k) plan, sign up and contribute all you can. Your taxes will be lower, your company may kick in more, and automatic deductions make it easy. Over time, compound interest and tax deferrals make a big difference in the amount you will accumulate. Find out about your plan. For example, how much would you need to contribute to get the full employer contribution and how long would you need to stay in the plan to get that money.

  4. Don’t touch your retirement savings
If you withdraw your retirement savings now, you’ll lose principal and interest and you may lose tax benefits or have to pay withdrawal penalties. If you change jobs, leave your savings invested in your current retirement plan, or roll them over to an IRA or your new employer’s plan.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Heat & Cool Efficiently

As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. So making smart decisions about your home’s heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills — and your comfort. Take these steps to increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling system.

  1. Change your air filter regularly
Check your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every 3 months. A dirty filter will slow down airflow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool — wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system — leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.

  2. Tune up your HVAC equipment yearly
Just as a tune-up for your car can improve your gas mileage, a yearly tune-up of your heating and cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort.

  3. Install a programmable thermostat
A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week. Through proper use of pre-programmed settings, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *The Efficient Window Collaborative – Benefits: Improved Comfort

Winter Thermal Comfort

An older window with a lower glass temperature feels colder because more heat is radiated from a person’s body to the window. Cold glass can also create uncomfortable drafts as air next to the window is cooled and drops to the floor. This sets up an air movement pattern that feels drafty and accelerates heat loss. High performance windows with lower U-factors will result in a higher interior window temperature in winter and thus greater comfort. Proper installation along with weather-stripping designed to seal tightly (for operable windows) will also improve comfort by reducing cold air leakage.

Summer Thermal Comfort

In summer, strong direct sunlight strikes people and interior surfaces, creating overheating and discomfort. Windows with low solar heat gain coefficients will reduce the solar radiation coming through the glass and associated discomfort. Low solar heat gain low-E glass (spectrally selective) reduces heat gain while still providing sufficient light and view.

‘Tis the season for roof replacement! Everywhere you look, you see roofs being replaced. If you need a new roof, Dale Cardwell, founder of TrustDale.com, recommends you contact Dr. Roof! Click HERE to receive your exclusive Dr. Roof/TrustDale Deal of a FREE solar powered attic vent with every roof installation over $7000.00. That’s an $800 value! Plus, you get the Dr. Roof/TD Make It Right Guarantee!

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Popular Roofing Materials

What most homeowners desire is a roof that’s not too expensive, requires no maintenance, and lasts forever. However, most roofs are replaced – or at least repaired – every ten years. By carefully choosing your home’s roofing material, you can reduce the cost of replacement. In the long run, you’ll use less building material, fill up less landfill space with discarded material, and put less demand on our natural resources.

You can realize other environmental benefits from your roofing choices. If you select a light-colored surface or a material that doesn’t absorb heat from the sun, you significantly reduce your home’s cooling needs. When your attic stays cooler, your cooling bills go down.

There is a wide choice of materials used to roof a house, ranging from thatch – dried grass, to slate – pieces of stone. Modern products like plastic, fiberglass and concrete are available, and some innovative, energy-efficient homes are being roofed with sod. New products are being developed to overcome the shortcomings of older roofing materials, meet the demands of modern building techniques, and conform to increasingly stringent building codes.
