TrustDale Tip of the Day: *:How To Plant A Living Fence – Using A Fast Growing Plant To Cover Fence

Covering chain link fences is a common problem for many homeowners. While chain link fencing is inexpensive and easy to install, it does lack the beauty of other kinds of fencing. However, if you take a few minutes to learn how to plant a living fence with a fast growing plant to cover fence sections, you can have a fence that is both lovely and inexpensive.

Covering chain link fences with plants

There are a few things to consider when covering chain link fences with plants. Before deciding which plant you will use, think about what you would like the plants that grow on fences to accomplish. Did you want flowering vines for fences or foliage vines? Did you want an evergreen vine or a deciduous vine? Did you want an annual vine or a perennial vine?

Each choice is important depending on what you want for your fence.

Flowering vines for fences

If you would like to look at flowering vines for fences, you have several choices.

If you would like a fast growing plant to cover the fence, you will want an annual. Some annual flowering vines for fences include:

  • Hops
  • Hyacinth Bean
  • Black-eyed Susan Vine
  • Passion Flower
  • Morning Glory

If you were looking for some perennial flowering vines for fences, these would include:

  • Dutchman’s Pipe
  • Trumpet Vine
  • Clematis
  • Climbing Hydrangea
  • Honeysuckle
  • Wisteria

Evergreen and foliage plants that grow on fences

Evergreen plants that grow on fences can help to keep your fence looking lovely all year round. They can also help add winter interest to your garden or serve as a backdrop to your other plants. Some evergreen vines for covering chain link fences include:

  • Persian Ivy
  • English Ivy
  • Boston Ivy
  • Creeping Fig
  • Gelsemium sempervirens

Non-evergreen but foliage focused plants can bring a startling and lovely backdrop to the garden. Many times foliage vines that grow on fences are variegated or have splendid fall color and are exciting to look at. For a foliage vine for your fence, try:

  • Hardy Kiwi
  • Variegated Porcelain Vine
  • Virginia Creeper
  • Silver Fleece Vine
  • Purple Leaved Grape

Now that you know how to plant a living fence using vines, you can start to beautify your chain link fence. When it comes to plants that grow on fences, you have many choices on what kinds of vines to grow. Whether you are looking for a fast growing plant to cover a fence or something that provides year round interest, you are sure to find a vine that suits your tastes and needs.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *The benefits of carpet cleaning

There are many benefits to ensuring that your carpets are kept clean and in good condition. The aesthetic aspect is important to ensure that your carpets look as good as possible. A badly maintained carpet can ruin the look of the whole room, no matter how nice the rest of the décor is. A well-kept, clean carpet can have the opposite effects, and can really make a difference to the room, even if the rest of the décor leaves something to be desired.

Another, and even more important, benefit is the potential improvement to health. A great many people suffer from allergies and conditions such as asthma and eczema. A dusty, dirty carpet will throw up particles every time it is walked upon, which can exacerbate such conditions. By keeping your carpets clean and free from debris, the household can enjoy cleaner air as well as cleaner carpet, which can be very beneficial where general health and air is concerned.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *More Quick Cleaning Tips
See how easy it is to take a few spare minutes when they arise and tackle a bunch of overlooked cleaning jobs. Here are some quick cleaning tips to help you make good use of your spare time and free up dedicated cleaning time for the harder stuff. It’s amazing what you can get done in just a few minutes when you put your mind to it!

Here are 10 quick cleaning tips to keep you working efficiently and effortlessly…

  1. Put a new box of baking soda in the fridge or freezer. With just a few seconds of effort, you’ll have everything smelling better in no time! Have a few extra seconds while you’re looking in the fridge? Toss out any food that looks like it has seen better days!
  2. Toss junk mail and catalogs. Better yet, keep a shredder in a convenient location and run anything with personal info right through the shredder. It only takes a minute to reduce your pile of mail – and avoid identity theft, too!
  3. Test your smoke alarms. This is often a neglected task and is important to make sure that your smoke detectors are in good working order.
  4. Fluff pillows on a couch, chair, or loveseat. It’s a 60-second way to give a room a just freshened up look.
  5. Treat a laundry stain. Pre-treating stains when you know they occur makes it a lot easier to remove them when it’s laundry time.
  6. Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of a garbage can. Again, a few seconds of effort keeps your house smelling fresh!
  7. Clean one drawer. Or at least get rid of obvious junk so it will make the drawer easier to rearrange when you have a few more minutes to spare.
  8. Go through today’s mail so it doesn’t pile up and become a larger task a few days from now.
  9. Focus on just one small space and throw something out or put something away where it belongs.
  10. Have an extra minute while you’re in the car? Clean out cup holders! They seem to collect lots of junk and take just a minute to clean out to keep your car looking as clean and organized as your house.

TrustDale Tip of the Day:*5 Ways to Prevent Drain Clogs

Slow drains are annoying, but they are also a sign of a bigger problem. If you have something clogging your drain it will only build up and become a bigger problem over time. Here are five ways to avoid clogging your drains:

  1. Use a drain screen.
Hair and soap scum are major culprits in clogging bath and shower drains. Use a drain screen to catch the debris and clean the screen regularly.
  2. Don’t pour grease down the drain.
When you finish cooking, let the grease harden and scoop out as much as you can into the garbage. If you pour grease down the drain, it will harden in your pipes.
  3. Don’t pour anything else down the drain.
Avoid putting any other chemicals down the drain. Even in a laundry room sink, you’ll clog the pipes. Chemical drain cleaners can even erode pipes, so use them sparingly.
  4. Clean your sink stoppers.
Pop-up stoppers can accumulate build-up and should be cleaned regularly.

  5. Pour boiling water down the drain.
Pour boiling water down your drains once a week. Make this a regular part of your cleaning routine to clear the pipes of any scum and build-up.

If your drain does get clogged, try a vinegar solution. If that doesn’t work, you may have to go in to find the offender and tackle it with a plunger.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Mowing Your Lawn the Right Way

Proper mowing is one of the most important practices in keeping your lawn healthy. Grasses are like most plants — if you clip off the growing points (for grass, it’s in the crown, where the new leaves develop), the plants branch out and become denser, which in this case, turns thousands of individual grass plants into a tightly woven turf or a lawn. If you didn’t mow at all, your yard would look more like a prairie than a lawn. But the mere act of mowing isn’t what makes a lawn look good. Mowing height and mowing frequency determine how healthy and attractive your lawn looks. After all, cutting a lawn is stressful for the grass. The leaves make the food for the roots — and how would you like it if someone kept cutting off your food?

Height does count

Most grasses have a range of recommended mowing heights. Stay at the upper end of that range when the lawn is under stressful conditions, such as hot weather or drought, or if you have a shady lawn. In cooler weather, you can cut the grass a little lower.
Follow the one-third rule. For a thriving lawn, never cut away more than one-third of the grass blade in any one mowing. If the grass “gets ahead of you” because of wet weather or your busy schedule, move up the cutting height of your mower to the highest possible setting and mow. If clippings are too long and heavy, even at that cutting height, catch them with the bagging unit or clean up after mowing with a leaf rake. Then move the cutting height back to your normal range and cut the lawn again a few days after that first mowing. Table 1 shows suggested mowing heights for different grass types.

Table 1: Ideal Mowing Heights

Grass type Height
Bahia grass; fescue, tall; blue grama; buffalo grass 2 to 3 inches
Bent grass 1/4 to 1 inch
Bermuda grass, common 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches
Bermuda grass, hybrid 1/2 to 1 inch
Centipede grass; zoysia grass* 1 to 2 inches
Fescue, fine; St. Augustine grass 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches
Kentucky bluegrass 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches
Ryegrass, annual and perennial 1-1/2 to 2 inches

*You can mow some newer, dwarf varieties lower.

Edging and trimming are the finishing touches of mowing, kind of like getting a shave after you’ve had a haircut. Edging and trimming are pretty close to being the same thing. Some tools are called edgers because they’re designed to trim the lawn along a hard surface like a driveway or sidewalk. Edgers cut a nice clean edge, but leave some dirt and grass debris that you need to clean up. On the other hand, you can use trimmers anywhere — along a hard surface, in tight spaces, next to planting beds, and so on. Trimmers also leave some clippings on paths and driveways that you need to sweep up.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Protecting Your Home From Break-Ins

One of the easiest crimes to prevent — burglary — is also one of the most common. Somewhere in the U.S. there’s a burglary committed every 15 seconds. If it happens at your home, you lose more than a few possessions. A break-in, even when you’re not there, has a major impact on you and your family’s sense of safety and well-being.

Burglaries don’t have to happen. There are many things you can do to boost home security and make your house burglary-resistant. Here are tips you can use to help you keep your family safe and your home and its contents intact.

Anti-Burglary Tip No. 1: Don’t Advertise You’re Away
The first thing a burglar looks for when choosing a house for a break-in is one with no one in it. If you make your house look occupied when you’re gone, most burglars will simply pass it by. Here are some ways to do that.

  • Use automatic light timers throughout the house and have them turn on and off in a way that simulates your normal patterns. Look for light timers that have battery backup so the timer doesn’t stop if there is a power failure. Using timers that have more than one on-off cycle can create the illusion of movement from room to room.
  • Turn the volume of your phone’s ringer down so someone outside can’t hear them ring.
  • If you can, have your calls forwarded while you’re away. Burglars sometimes call to see if anyone’s home before a break-in.
  • Instead of stopping your mail and newspaper delivery, ask a neighbor to pick them up and hold them for you. Seeing deliveries being made makes a burglar think someone is at home.

Anti Burglary Tip No. 2: Don’t Make It Easy to Hide

A burglar is more likely to try getting into a house where there is less chance of being seen. Taking away the robber’s cover goes a long way toward protecting your house.

  • Thieves can hide behind trees and shrubs. Trim back or remove any shrubbery next to doors or windows. If you are going to use plants next to the house, you should use thorny plants such as holly or roses.
  • Use outside security lighting to illuminate every access door. The main entrance should be illuminated with a fixture that has two bulbs or with two fixtures in case one bulb burns out.
  • Use exterior lighting with motion detectors for the yard, driveway and other outside regions. If lights come on when someone approaches, a burglar is less likely to try breaking into your home. Also, if the lights are activated by motion rather than being left on all the time, your neighbors are more likely to notice if someone is moving around your house.
  • Remember the back and side of your home offer some concealment for a burglar who is trying to break in. So pay close attention to securing all entrances, and if possible avoid installing a tall privacy fence since that offers even greater concealment.

Anti Burglary Tip No. 3: Install a Home Security Alarm System
Home security alarms are not a guarantee that burglars will not enter your home. But they do make it more difficult by increasing the risk that the burglar will be seen and caught. If it’s obvious your house is alarmed, the burglar may look for an easier target.

  • Be sure to use the yard sign and window decals that say your house is protected by a home security system.
  • Regularly check to make sure the sign is visible and has not been covered up by shrubs or pulled out of the ground by pets or neighborhoods children.
  • Choose a home security system that uses motion detectors as well as arms all windows and doors that could provide access.
  • Also consider using glass-break sensors that set off the alarm at the sound of a window or glass door panel being broken. Some sensors also detect sudden shock waves and will set the alarm off if someone is trying to kick open the door.
  • Never post your pass code next to or on the home security alarm key pad.

Anti Burglary Tip No. 4: Get to Know Your Neighbors

  • The best home security comes from neighbors who look out for one another. Make it a point to meet your neighbors so that you can ask them to keep an eye on things while you’re away.
  • If your neighborhood does not already have a neighborhood watch program, consider organizing one. Most local law enforcement agencies have people available who can help you plan and organize a watch program to keep not just your possessions safe, but your family as well.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *5Tried and Tested Investment Property Tips For Your Quick Success

When it comes to long-term investment, there is nothing to beat investment in real estate. With property prices almost always on the upswing, it is one investment that brings you rich dividends in the future. Investing in property though is not all about just having the financial wherewithal to buy a particular property. It has a lot to do with finding the right property. You may be wondering what constitutes the right property. Here are some of the best investment property tips that you can find anywhere, which can help you make the right decision.

  1. Foremost among all the investment property tips is to imagine that the property that you intend to buy is for renting out, rather than you living there. Remember, a sprawling lawn will not bring you cash flow. Instead, you need to take into account as to what a tenant would want. The house that you want to buy should have the necessary supporting infrastructure to attract tenants.
  2. Another one of the important investment property tips that you should not ignore is to take for granted that property prices are always on the higher side and still increasing. Remember, you can always find bargains. The key lies in shopping around and finding one.
  3. You should never feel dejected that you could not afford a particular house. You should remember that there are plenty of other houses that are available.
  4. One of the key investment property tips is to do thorough research, before you go about looking for a property. You should be aware of the latest trends in the real estate market.
  5. Another one of the important investment property tips is to seek professional help. For instance, you can always get to know about the latest market trends from an experienced real estate agent.

TrustDale Tip of the Day: *Water-Saving Tips for Your Lawn and Garden

Much of the summer peak demand is attributed to lawn and garden watering. Water is often applied inefficiently, resulting in significant wastage due to over watering, evaporation or run-off. Here are some general watering tips to help avoid wastage:

      • Before watering, always take into account the amount of water Mother Nature has supplied to your lawn or garden in the preceding week. Leave a measuring container in the yard to help you monitor the amount of rainfall (empty it once per week) and follow the tips below to help determine how much water to add. Also, bear in mind any watering restrictions that may apply in your municipality.
      • Water in the early morning, before 9 a.m., to reduce evaporation and scorching of leaves from the sun. Water on calm days to prevent wind drift and evaporation.
      • Set up your sprinkler or hose to avoid watering hard surfaces such as driveways and patios. If you’re not careful, it’s water and money down the drain.
      • Water slowly to avoid run-off and to ensure the soil absorbs the water.
      • Regularly check your hose or irrigation equipment for leaks or blockages.
      • Collect rainwater from your roof in a rain barrel or other large container and keep it covered with an insect screen. Direct the downspout of your eaves troughs into the rain barrel.
      • Choose an efficient irrigation system. A soaker hose placed at the base of plants on the ground applies water to the soil where it is needed — rather than to the leaves — and reduces evaporation (see Figure 1). Drip or trickle irrigation systems are highly efficient because they deliver water slowly and directly to the roots under the soil surface. This promotes deeper roots, which improve a plant’s drought resiliency. If you use a sprinkler, choose one with a timer and that sprays close to the ground.

Figure 1: Soaker hoses have tiny pores that emit water slowly and directly to the soil. Place them at the base of plants on the ground.
